Uriah and Sarah
migrated to Pennsylvania from New York about 1814 and raised their
family in Scott Township, Wayne County. Uriah died there 28 Sep 1847 and rests in Hale Eddy Cemetery in bordering New York. After his death some of the family migrated west. Sarah, also
known as Sally, died 27 Oct 1865 and is buried in Mound City, Linn County, Kansas.
Sarah's death notice from Kansas as published in the Linn County Border Sentinel on November 3, 1865:
" Died, at the residence of her son, Uriah T. Smith, in Mound City, MRS. SARAH W. SMITH, formerly of Scott, Wayne Co., Pa., in the 77th year of her age.
Dearest mother, thou hast left us,
Here thy loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal. "
Uriah's will:
" I Uriah Smith of the Township of Scott in the County of Wayne being weak in body, but of sound mind and discretion, considering the uncertainty of life do make publish and ordain this my last will and testament revoking all others, First I give to my beloved wife Sarah, out of the farm I now possess in the Township of Scott aforesaid, a
parcel of land described as adjoining the old line of the Wyant farm & running from said line along the Starrucca road southerly to the Southerly end of the new house I now occupy -- thence Easterly & parallel with the aforesaid Wyant line to the head or north part of a Swamp, thence northerly to the Wyant line, with the free use of our half part of the dwelling house upon the same, she being permitted to choose whichever half part shall please her best, and also one half of all the fruit that shall annually grow upon all the premises whether apples, currants, plums or other varieties, and otherwise the whole free use of the said described parcel of ground unmeasured but estimated to contain at least two acres & probably more -- and also one cow, she choosing out of all the cows I may possess at my decease and also five sheep, if so many there then should be of her own choice. She to have hold & enjoy the same during her natural life, and at her decease to become the
property and possession of my beloved son Uriah T. Smith. I also desire that she should have & receive her legal Dower of one third part of my remaining property during her natural life according to law. To my daughter Eliza I bequeath the sum of one dollar, To my son John F. Smith one dollar, to Lewis Smith one dollar, to Michael Smith one dollar, To my daughter Julia Ann, wife of Adam Inglert I give a parcel of land on the west side of the Starrucca road adjoining land formerly occupied by William Dickey & recently surveyed by Harvey D. Williams containing some 16 or 18 acres, to be for her own separate use during her natural life & at her demise to become the property of her son Uriah Inglert, nevertheless this devise or bequest shall be of no effect or avail, unless the said Adam Inglert or some one in his behalf shall first pay to my son an equivalent to fifteen dollars in work according to an agreement made between us heretofore. To my daughter Sarah W. wife of William Curtis, I give one dollar -- To my daughter Abagail P. wife of William Cushman I give the sum of fifteen dollars, as also one good cow not less than three years old nor more than six in the Spring of 1849 at which time she shall be entited to receive the same. To my son Uriah T. Smith I give all the remainder of my estate real and personal (except as hereinafter directed) In consideration of which he is to pay all my debts due at my decease, To pay the aforesaid sum of fifteen dollars to Abagail Cushman as above mentioned and all & singular the legacies gifts & bequests to my other children as before recited, and he is also to have the privilege of living in & using the unoccupied half part of my house -- to have full ingress and egress to & from the same and other necessary conveniences to its enjoyment in common with my wife Sarah, but not to let the same to any person but with her consent. The several sums of money to be paid by him to my other children within the space of four years from my decease. To my son Wesley T. I give & Bequeath that portion of my estate lying between the Williams Road & the Starrucca Road and also on the other side the Starrucca Road all South of the Ransom road or road from Ransom's across the Starrucca Road. And further, should it fall out & happen that either Uriah T. or Wesley T. should die or depart beyond Seas, leaving no family or issue, then that portion of my estate designed for him as above is to become the property and possession of the survivor of them, living in the country, he taking upon himself the duties and charges herein before contained, and not already paid or discharged. And lastly I direct that my well beloved son-in-law William Cushman shall be sole executor of this my last will & testament. Given under my hand & seal this twentieth day of September in the year 1847 at the Township of Texas in presence of
